Should I Replace my Builder Brass Door Knobs to Sell my House?
What is the first thing you touch when you walk into a home? It’s the door knob.
What does a cheap brass doorknob say? ” I’m not fancy. May a low offer.”
What does a pitted, tarnished door knob say? “The house is not kept up. Low ball me.”
What does a contemporary new looking door knob say? “Come on in. I have much more to show you.”
First impressions are so important. If you have a cheap or dated door knob on the front door, REPLACE IT! Don’t give it a second thought.
What about the door knobs inside your house? Should you replace your builder brass door knob??? YES! YES! and YES! Don’t give those a second thought either.
Cheap builder brass door knobs or dated brass door knobs found in older homes either shouts cheap builder door knob or “I’m trying to cut corners so I’ll install the cheapest door out there” or worse, “I’m old and not keeping up with the times.”
What should a brass door knob be replaced with?
Lever vs Knob
Levers are a stylish look but more importantly, levers are very easy to use for an aging population as they don’t require the use of hands to squeeze. They’re also great if you have your hands full of groceries and you can use an elbow to open the door. They tend to be a bit more pricier than a regular knob, but money worth spending. Knobs of course are always in style and typically less expensive than levers, but the type of finish that is popular comes and goes as with any trend.
The lever is a higher end look than a regular door knob. It can be more expensive but if your home is in the higher price point range, then you should definitely consider this upgrade.
Both satin and polished chrome continues to be a very popular and timeless look. It it suitable for most interiors and is a go to for many homeowners.
Brass is back but its much more sleeker and stylish from the 80’s and nothing like the builder brass door knobs that frequent new builds.
Black is a very bold and sophisticated. It makes an incredible design statement and is suitable for the contemporary home or condo.
4. Oiled Bronze
Bronze is still in style and is a staple go to look. But comparing oiled bronze to black, gold and nickel, the later three are more trendy and more of an updated look. Whether you’re staging to sell or styling to stay, the other three would add more value to your home, BUT again, the style must fit into the decor of your entire home so that should be your guide.
1. Stick with the same finish throughout the interior. Once you pick a certain finish or style, nickel, bronze or pewter, stick with it ! You can of course, have a Don’t mix and match. That shouts you’re trying to save money.
Speaking of money, if you’re replacing the knobs in an entire home, it can be pricey. If you can only afford to do one floor, do the main floor, then the second floor, and the basement last.
2. If you can only afford to replace one door knob and the front door needs replacing, do that one! Make sure however, that the finish for the door knob is the same type of finish for the door bell, light and mailbox if you have one.
3. If you’re on a budget, pick the most popular style of door knob. It doesn’t have to be your taste but it needs to go with the rest of the decor in your home. The key to the upgrade is the most economical price point possible which suits your home’s price range.
Designer Tip: Door knobs may seem like a small matter, but this relatively small outlay of money can really impact the value of your home and ultimately the offer you get on your home.
