Top 5 Color Choices for Garage Door

The garage door should complement your front door but not compete for attention.  Your garage door CAN make a statement but it needs to be a subtle one.

Your front door and entrance is the focal point of your home. NOT your garage door! Your garage door can make a statement as long as it doesn’t overpower the front door or other features of the front of the house or the landscaping.

With the exception of custom or high-end homes, most houses have the standard garage door but nevertheless, your garage door does make a statement about your house so its important how it looks because you want positive curb appeal.

When choosing the color of your garage door, its important to take into consideration the color of the brick or stone, roof color, your roof color, and other colors that are going on at the front of your home.

White Garage Doors

White is a classic and a popular go to choice. White garage doors are bright and crisp. They can really add to your curb appeal combined with the correct exterior. The downside of white is that it shows marks easier than a darker color. Something to keep in mind if you have a ball hockey player in your family.

Beige, Light Grey & Greige Garage Doors

Beige, grey & greige are very popular color choices among garage door colors. They are neutral enough but also make a subtle and commanding statement to a home’s curb appeal. Soft and pale, this shade (left) has all the makings of the perfect garage door colour. It blends into the background, keeping the focal point on your beautiful home, but at the same time enhances the look of the house.

Some brick colors, stone or siding, will dictate what color your garage door should be. If you have brick in the beige/taupe family, then choosing a traditional beige or taupe that complements these colors, will make your home pleasing to the eye. Here on our right, the homeowner has the garage door matching the roof color. This works well when the color is a good match. If one of these colors were a bit off, the whole look would be unsettling.

Black or Dark Grey (Charcoal) Garage Doors

Source: unknown

Black has always been a popular color choice for garage doors. In newer housing developments, you will see deep black-blue or dark grey as the “trendier” shades to traditional “jet black.” However when choosing your color you need to take into consideration the other features of your home like the style and your brick color for example. For a contemporary look, paint your window panes the same colour. Black window trim is all the rage right now! Black is elegant and hides dirt easier than a lighter color door. The downside of black is that it can look stark if not done properly.

This traditional black door (photo above) suits the style & features of the house.  The shutters & roof pulls this house together.  The red door gives this house the punch of color it needs.  They could have gone with a brighter red, a bright yellow or trendy turquoise as they would have all been good color choices for the front door too.

This dark grey is the perfect color choice for this house & brick color.  Black garage doors would have been too stark for this home and also too busy for the busy stone driveway. The driveway is the focal point with this home. LOL. The garage doors also complement the roof color nicely.  A bolder color for the front door would have made this house really stand out.

When Black Garage Doors are too Stark

This black garage doors may be a bit too stark for some, but it does match the windows, railings and the front door. It also suits the contemporary style of the home. Another choice may have been to go with the gray shade of the stone so that the garage doors don’t become the focal point. The stark black garage doors makes the garage door become the focal point where the focal point should be the entrance way & landscaping.

The black garage doors (photo right) are the focal point of this home since its the first thing you notice when you drive up to the house. The homeowners or builder, would have been wise to choose a dark gray charcol garage door that would compliment the roof and not make the garage the focal point.

Walnut Brown Garage Doors

5-most-popular-garage-door0colors-add-value-to-your-home-debi-collinson

If you prefer warmer tones but like the idea of a dark colour for your garage doors, deep walnut brown is a good choice for you. Walnut Brown, if done properly, can look like an expensive wood door with out the expensive price tag. BUT dark walnut brown done incorrectly can make a house look dated. If you want a dark brown color for your garage door, consider choosing a real wood door. Yes its more money but it won’t date your house, and it will add value to your home.

All dark brown colors are not created equal.  Choosing the right “walnut brown” color is key.   The “right” walnut brown color can be a good imitation of a wood door as seen right.  The “wrong” or “old” dark brown color can actually date a house.

What is off about this house?

top-5-most-popular-garage-door-colors-add-value-to-your-home-debi-collinson

The house has the wrong garage door color AND the wrong roof color. We don’t see the full picture here but you can see that the garage door is a front loading door in front of the driveway which means it has a prominent spot for the house exterior. It stands out and makes a statement. The garage door is not an awful choice but the homeowner would have made a safer choice in picking a lighter shade of brown which complements the brick’s exterior. Also, to add to problem, the roof color is charcoal which is not even in the brown/beige family that the garage door and brick color is in. Having a weathered brown roof color would have toned down the starkness of the roof.

When choosing a garage door color, you need to consider all the elements of the house. The brick, stone or siding, the roof, & window color trim. Ignoring one or more of these elements will make the appearance feel off.

Should my garage door be the the same color as my front door?

The short answer is, it depends. It depends on the color of your front door and the other elements of your house, like your siding, brick or stone AND your roof color. Some designers say the front door and the garage door should be the same. But the front door and garage door have different purposes so why would we expect them to be the same color? That’s not realistic. In some instances the same color works perfectly, whereas in other cases, when the front door is the same color as the garage door, it makes the house look bland and boring.

The front door should be your focal point.  Your front door should make a fun & bold statement.

Your garage door does NOT need to match the front door – especially if you have a door that is a powerful color like red, yellow or blue.  In that case, it should not match the front door.

top-5-most-popular-garage-door-colors-add-value-to-your-home-debi-collinson

In this case, in the photo to our right, the front door & garage door looks charming and adds to the curb appeal of this house.  It’s worth noting that the color of the siding, door and window trim, the roof color AND the front door & garage door color are exucted perfectly to make this home spectacular.

If the garage door was a double garage door however, the bold pop of red for a double garage door would potentially be overkill. Or if any of the other colors were a shade off, this home would not come across as amazing as it does.

The photo on our right shows how a poorly an executed color plan can detract from a house’s curb appeal. A blue front door with a soft beige or greige garage door that matches the brick color would be a great choice for this tiny house and not overwhelm it with bold colors. A white garage door would also have worked here since there is predominantly white trim in both the house and garage door.

Can you see why the red is the WRONG choice of color for the house above but works for the cute gray one?

Also, the front door color for the above photo is wrong. It is a red with pink undertones whereas the brick is red-orange. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

What paint color should the trim be?

Painting the trim to match the garage door gives the doors a cohesive look.  In some cases, I’ve seen the garage door trim painted the same color as the house trim. In some cases that works, but in some cases it can look dated. Test it to see what looks best for your house. You don’t want the trim of your garage door to stand out. It’s not the focal point here.

What color should you choose with a multiple color brick or stone?

If your home is a multiple brick color, find a NEUTRAL color using one of the bricks or stone from the house. This will guarantee that the garage door will “blend” with the rest of the house. Without seeing the rest of the house, its difficult to tell, but the gray or cream in the brick may be an alternative color as well.

garage door, color matches the brick

Normally I wouldn’t pick a “mustard” color for a garage door, but this color works well for this particular brick color. This mustard is also a subdued shade, so it doesn’t shout out ‘I’m mustard.” It compliments the brick beautifully in an elegant way.

Having a front door matching the garage door in this case would make this home, oh, so stunning.

Don’t paint your garage door an off color. It’s NOT cute!

how-to-choose-correct-garage-door-color-add-value-to-your-home-debi-collinson

It may look cute to you but in the end, garage doors that are not typical garage door colors NOT only detract from the home’s curb appeal, they can actually devalue your home. Not something you want to do, especially if you’re getting your house ready to sell!

The garage door is not a place to make a bold color statement. Choose your front door or your landscaping if you want the WOW factor for your curb appeal!

Is a two tone garage door colors in style?

top-5-most-popular-garage-door-colors-add-value-to-your-home-debi-collinson

Photo above: Lowes.com

Two toned garage doors are in style but they’re not a popular go to pick because they’re tricky to decorate with as you can see in both photos. As with any design, it depends on how its done if its looks great, too busy (as in both of these photos in my humble opinion lol) or dated. Two toned garage doors seem to be more popular in traditional homes like the one on the right. However, in this particular photo, they seem to have a lot of different colors going on. You do see two toned garage colors popular in some contemporary designed homes.

Two toned garage doors can look very stylish, too busy or very dated. Unfortunately most of them tend to look too busy or very dated. There doesn’t seem to be an in-between option.

  1. Debi, I was wondering if you would know the paint color of the garage doors that you posted. That would be a picture with the three garage doors that are tope with the lighter walls. Or if you could pick a color that is similar. Please help.

    1. Hi Rita – thank you for your comment. It tricky choosing a garage door color by itself. You typically pull the color out of the brick or stone, match it with shutters or trim, or the roof color if its the correct color for the house. Here is an article I wrote about how to choose a color for your garage door. https://addvaluetoyourhome.com/how-to-choose-the-right-garage-door-color-for-your-home/ Unfortunately I don’t have the name of the garage door color in the photo. It was a manufacturer’s color. I would be happy to help you choose a color if you want to check out my online color consults here http://www.addvaluetoyourhome.shop Debi

  2. Hi Debi, we are building a white farmhouse (Alabaster). The windows are white and the front door will be painted black (either Tricorn or Iron Ore). The roof is silver metal. The columns on the front porch will be white and the front porch floor Trex will be a darker grey, almost black. We will have black barn lights around the exterior of the house. There will be antiqued brick around the slab below the porch. It will be red, black, gray, white, and caramel in color with gray mortar. The garage doors (2) have the x’s on them with small windows above. Should I paint the garage doors black or white? Thank you!

    1. Hi Deanna – I’m just seeing this question now. I’m sorry I missed it. It sounds like you have alot of different colors going on with the exterior of your house. Either white or black would look good without seeing pictures. Keep in mind your garage door should not be the focal point of your home so if black makes the garage stand out, then go with white. If black garage doors complements the other black in your exterior, then you can go with black if there is enough black with your fixed elements. Its difficult to be conclusive without pictures. Good luck!

  3. Thank you for sharing this information. I’m interested in painting my garage doors black. Would that heat up my garage?

    1. Hi Linda – Great question. There are a number of factors that you need to look at regarding the black heating up your garage. I’ll use a black roof as an example. You typically don’t see black roofs in the southern hotter regions because the sun can definitely heat up the house and make it hot during the day, and into early evening on really hot days. You do, however, see black in more northern climates where there are 4 seasons and heat is not as much as an issue. With regards to your garage door, it would depend on how hot your climate gets and how often. It would also depend on which direction your garage faces. If your garage faces north, you would not receive as much sun as a south exposure for example. Also is it a 1, 2 or 3 car garage? The more exposure, the more sun you would get. The garage door, is not on an angle like a roof so depending on the exposure and climate, you can take that into consideration. If you do go with a black door and it is exposed to alot of sun, the black will fade and lighten faster than a white or taupe door would for example and may require touching more frequently than the lighter colors. Lastly, I would take a walk around your neighborhood and see if any of your neighbors with the SAME exposure, same number of garage doors have a black door. Perhaps you can ask them what their experience is. Talk to 2 – 3 people though if you can to get a good feel of what it would be like. Good luck!

  4. We just had beige garage doors installed. there is some wood siding over the top of the garage/dental molding and soffit that is more cream.

We were going to paint the siding to a closer beige color to match the garage doors better but leave the dental mold/soffit??? we need your recommendation. ty!!

    1. Hi Traci – its difficult to say without knowing what other colors are going on in the front of your house. What color is the trim of your windows? Is the garage door in the same site line as the front windows? Painting everything the same beige may be too much. Test a color in a spot to try. Hope that helps. Debi

  5. I am in the process of selecting a new garage door for my house. The dilemma I am finding is what color? My house has large white vinyl trim window, multi colored red brick home, and a light gray stone. The trim work including gutters is beige. The problem is none of the beige garage doors match my current trim color. If I paint the garage door the same color as my trim it voids the warranty. Would a white garage door be the best solution and just paint the trim inside the garage door? I was leaning to a faux wood steel garage door, but I think that might date my house.

  6. My house has light grey siding, I’m having all of the white trim painted a darker grey. Is there a better color choice that you would recommend. Also, I’m replacing my garage doors, what color would work best for them.
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Marcia – I don’t have the color unfortunately. Get some color chips from the store that you like and put them on your door for a few days. You can also go on Pinterest and search popular red front door colors. You will get lots of suggestions from bloggers that have painted their front door red. I hope that helps. Debi

    1. Hi Eric – I don’t have the exact color of gray but Benjamin Moore’s whale gray 2134-40, dior gray 2133-40 and wolf gray 2127-40 are all similar to the color in the picture. It’s not recommended that you choose a color from a screen as the colors are not exact. Benjamin Moore has paint chips of course to help you decided. Good luck!

  7. Hi Debi,

We are building a new home in Florida. The exterior stucco house color has been painted Sherwin Williams SW 9168 Elephant Ear. The shingled roof is a pewter color, which has more blue in it than we thought from the sample. We have a three car street facing garage (a two car door and a single car door). The Elephant Ear is a combination of a gray-taupe color. I thought the roof would tie in better with the exterior paint color if I painted my front glass door and the garage doors Sherwin Williams SW 7615 Sea Serpent. Many friends are telling me to leave the garage doors white and that the Sea Serpent is too dark with my Elephant Ear…but I want to do something different and tie in the roof to the house. Help! What should I do? I’m having a lot of anxiety over this issue!

We are trying to chhose a complimenting garge door color … options include a walnut stain, white or other complimenting color .. both the garage and the front door face the road. Any suggestions?

  9. Hi i would like some advice on the outside of my house, i have 2 tone stucco and would like to change it. Ive changed my garage doors to a walnut oak colour and need to paint the front door now as well,

  10. Struggling with the fine details with painting my garage doors. My house is a beige tone brick/with fascia similar. Going to paint my garage doors same color. However, do I paint my garage doors trim to match that same color? Or to match the white trim around my windows? I am going to paint my front door a deeper color of the beige and same thing….do I paint the trim white to match the windows? Or do I paint the entire trim/doors the same color? Help! Thanks!

  11. Hi,
Our house is beige/grey stone with sandalwood trip – eaves trough and window frames… and a grey roof. The front double doors have wrought iron window insert and are dark brown. The two single garage doors each have an arch above them – two and four feet high. What color would you recommend for the garage and arches? Should they match the front door? Should the arches be the same as the doors?
    Please advise…
    Frank.

  12. Hi Debi. I’m trying to pick windows for my pink brick house(bricks name was taupe with the builder but is a very light 90,s pink). I’m trying to decide on gentek windswept smoke or sable. When I look at sable all I see is green but windswept could be very grey. Have already paid large deposit but am stumped as to Color for 29 windows. If I did windswept would do iron oar doors and windswept garage. I like windswept Color but keep thinking sable would flow better. Help please. Debbie M

    1. Hi Debbie – thanks for reading my post. I would strongly recommend that you hire a decorator to hep you pick your colors. It’s really hard to pick out colors over the internet without seeing them. Especially for something as a big ticket item as windows. Ask your friends to see if they know of someone that they have used and like. Good luck!

  13. Debie – Please help! I am just struggling with choosing a garage door color. The garage is a dark grey, along with the lower part of the house (below the roof line of a wrap around porch), then white board and batten for the rest of the home. We are adding some wood timber to the front porch with posts, and also are putting in a wood dug fir front door. For garage colors I am considering beige, dark grey (however it will not match the garage) or a dark brown. The garage door will be painted, I did consider a wood look, but it does look a little reproduced with the fake grain. Thoughts? Style of home, modern farmhouse. THANK YOU – Tera

    1. Hi Tera – thank you for reading my post. You have a lot going on! Would the wood garage door match the wood timber of the front porch? To be honest I haven’t seen that look and I’m not sure it would look the best. Don’t go with beige. You would be introducing a new color scheme to your house. White would be the safest color and not make the garage stand out like a sore thumb. I would advise against a dark grey or dark brown- again it doesn’t co-ordinate with anything else and would stick out. These are my thoughts without seeing a picture. I hope that helps.

  14. Hi. I am having new siding and a new roof put on my home. I have white garage doors with white, capping. I am changing the capping around all windows to a light beige. Can’t decide if I should make the capping around the garage the same. Not sure if that would look good or should I keep it white. Please help!
    Thanks

    1. Hi Tamara – thanks for reading my blog. I would definitely keep the capping around the garage door in white. Capping it would make the garage door stand out in a negative way. Just curious as to why you picked a light beige for the capping color. Is it pulling from a color in your brick? The trend today for capping windows tends to be darker light a dark taupe, a darker gray or black. Of course, the darker capping trend may not apply in your geographical area depending on where you live. Especially if you’re live in a warmer climate. I hope that helps.

  15. Hi. I have a white traditional style home. Shutters are black, windows and trims are white, and front door black like the shutters. The garage doors are in the back showing from the backyard and not the front of the house. Would white garage doors be too much white or would black be too much for the eye?

    Thanks in advance

    1. Hi -its difficult to say without a photo but it depends on the look that you want. White garage doors will definitely blend in and not make any kind of statement. Will it look too white? It depends on the size of your house, landscaping etc. A black garagae door would make a statement and make it stand out. It would be alot of black with the garage door, shutters and front door. If you go with a black garage door, I would suggest painting the front door a different color to make it pop and to add interest to the curb appeal of your house. Here’s my post on popular front doors. Enjoy! https://www.addvaluetoyourhome.ca/color-paint-front-door/

  16. Bought a mountain home recently that is a dark cedar. We replaced the current outdated brown plain garage doors with a country style mahogany with wood grain look. It blends in too much with the house siding. I can send you a pic if you would like.
